Allen Dewitt Gwyn, Jr., a resident of the Oakland Community, United States Navy Career person and husband of Jerry L. Gwyn died Friday evening, October 23, 2009 at the St. Francis Hospital in Bartlett where he had been a patient for three days. He was 79 years of age and died following an extended illness.

Graveside Services with Military Honors were conducted for Mr. Gwyn at 10 A.M. Wednesday, October 28th with Rev. Michael Pence, Pastor of the Faith United Methodist Church in Oakland, officiating. Interment followed in the West Tennessee Veteran's Cemetery at Germantown. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-West Chapel of Oakland.

Mr. Gwyn was born April 5, 1930 in Blytheville, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Allen Dewitt Gwyn, Sr. and Nellie Mae Tunnel Gwyn. He was a graduate of the Little Rock, Arkansas High School and was married February 2, 1952 to the former Jerry L. Davenport, who survives. Mr. Gwyn was a career person in the United States Navy, serving for over twenty years before his retirement. He was a former resident of Bartlett before moving to Fayette County fourteen years ago. He was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church at Oakland and before his retirement was employed as a Barber at the Village Barber Shop. He was an avid Golfer and was a member of the Masonic Lodge for much of his life.

In addition to his wife of fifty-seven years, survivors of Mr. Gwyn include two sons, Steven Michael Gwyn of Dayton, TX and Allen Eugene Gwyn of North Little Rock, AR; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Faith United Methodist Church, 6270, Highway 64, Oakland, TN 38060.
