Alfred Aaron "Alf" Atkeison, well-known, lifelong resident of Somerville, U.S. Army Korean War Veteran and retired Postal Service Employee peacefully passed away at his home into the awaiting arms of our precious Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Father's Day, Sunday, June 21, 2009. He was 76 years of age.

Funeral services for Mr. Atkeison were conducted at 3 P.M. Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at the Somerville First Baptist Church where he was a longtime member, with Dr. Frank Crawford, officiating. Interment with Military Recognition followed in the Somerville City Cemetery and arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center - Main Chapel of Somerville.

A lifelong resident of Somerville, Mr. Atkeison was born on December 6, 1932, to George Druie and Virginia Howse Atkeison, who have both preceded him in death. Mr. Atkeison graduated with honors from Fayette County High School in 1951 and was captain of the football team his senior year. He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving in Germany during the Korean War and retired from the U.S. Postal Service in January of 2001. A person active in his community throughout his life, Mr. Atkeison enjoyed fishing, hunting and listening to Southern Gospel music. On December 18, 1960, he married the former Eva Grace Earnest of Hickory Valley, Tennessee, who survives him, A kind, gentle, outgoing person who enjoyed the friendship of many, Mr. Atkeison will be remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved his country and was proud of his community.

In addition to his wife of forty-eight years, Mr. Atkeison is also survived by his two daughters, Jennifer Atkeison and Janet Roberson (Mark), both of Somerville; a brother, Glenn Atkeison of Benton, AR; three grandchildren who were so very precious to their "Paw-paw": Grace Roberson, Sarah Roberson and Hunter Roberson.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers were Ed Atkeison, Mike Atkeison, Nathan Atkeison, Ernest Atkeison, Calvin Chambers, Jr. and Hunter Earnest.
