Alice (Long) Harvey

January 14, 1919 — November 17, 2011

Alice Long Harvey, resident of the Oak Grove Community, north of Somerville and widow of Alexander Harvey, Jr. died Thursday, November 17, 2011 at Allen Morgan Health and Rehab Center in Memphis. She was 92 years of age and died following an extended illness.

Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Harvey were conducted at 11 AM Saturday, November 19, 2011 at Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Somerville with Rev. H.B. Fields of the church officiating. Mrs. Franklin Tapp was organist and Mr. Tom Morrison was soloist. A private graveside service was held at Somerville City Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center – Main Chapel of Somerville.

Mrs. Harvey was born and grew up in Ohio, the daughter of the late G.W. Long and the late Lola Scott Long. Mrs. Harvey was married to Alexander Harvey, Jr. on December 8, 1945. They celebrated fifty years of marriage in 1995. Before her marriage, she was employed by the National Cash Register Company in Dayton, Ohio as an assistant to the chemical engineer in the Spectrochemical Analysis lab.

Mrs. Harvey served as a substitute teacher in the local schools for many years. She served more than forty years as the Adult Sunday School Teacher before her illness. She was a member of the Oak Grove – Shiloh United Methodist Women. She served the Fayette County Farm Bureau as its County Chairman four years. She was twice past President of the Craddock Book Club.

Mrs. Harvey is survived by two daughters, Alice Jane Mitchell (Robert) of Brownsville, Lois Ann Crenshaw of Memphis; her son, Alec Harvey (Debby) of Somerville; five grandchildren, Jennifer Mitchell, Jeff Mitchell (Melissa), Margaret Sikes (David), Ecklin Crenshaw, Angela Harvey; and four great grandchildren. Mrs. Harvey was preceded in death by her husband, Alexander Harvey, Jr. who died May 1, 1996; and her son, George Henry Harvey who died in 1965.
