Allen Hughes Cogbill
1921—2011
Mr. Allen Hughes Cogbill, longtime resident of the LaGrange Community died Saturday evening, February 26, 2011 at the Methodist LeBonheur Hospital in Germantown where he had been a patient for four days. He was 89 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Services of Remembrance for Mr. Cogbill were conducted at 10 A.M. Saturday, March 5
th
at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with special remarks from family members and friends. A Committal Service followed at 11:30 A.M. Saturday at the LaGrange Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes—Main Chapel of Somerville.
A native of LaGrange, Mr. Cogbill was the second son of Charles Lipscomb Cogbill and Louise Allen Cogbill, who preceded him in death. Mr. Cogbill or Mr. “C”, as he was known, graduated from Webb School in Bell Buckle, TN. He then graduated from Vanderbilt University with a B. S. in Chemical Engineering. Mr. Cogbill served in the U. S. Army during WW II with the 29
th
Engineering Unit in Manila, Philippines. He married November 30, 1948 the former Alice Crapser, who preceded him in death. Mr. Cogbill worked for and retired from the Division of Property Assessment for the State of Tennessee. He especially enjoyed photography throughout his lifetime chronicling family and friends.
The family is grateful for all the assistance he and the family received from several wonderful caregivers, caring friends and neighbors during the last few years of his life. The family wishes to extend their special thanks to Rosie, Sherron, Kristi and Fannie for their love and care for Mr. Cogbill during his illness.
Survivors of Mr. Cogbill include his four children: Martha Mulhern (Richard) of Baytown, Texas, Allen Hughes Cogbill, Jr. (Naomi) of Los Alamos, New Mexico, Elisabeth Cogbill (Chris Mikulin) of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, Lucy Cogbill of LaGrange; four grandchildren: Cynthia Mulhern Mills, Jessica Mulhern, Madeleine Cogbill, Andre Cogbill; four nephews: Charles Lipscomb Cogbill III of Wilmington, DE, James Bradley Cogbill of Ft. Lawn, SC, Andrew Cogbill of Wallingford, PA and Thomas Allen Cogbill of Burien, WA. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Cogbill was preceded in death by his brother Charles L. Cogbill.
