Alvis James Davis

January 29, 1938 — December 9, 2012

Alvis James Davis, known to many as “Country” Davis, resident of the Stanton Community and retired subcontractor for AT&T died Sunday morning, December 9, 2012 at his residence. He was 74 years of age and died following an illness of five months.

Services of Remembrance for Mr. Davis were conducted at 2 P.M. Tuesday, December 18th at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville. Special remarks and reflections were given by Mr. Davis’ grandson, William Henry and his daughter, Gina Youngblood. Interment followed in the Walls Cemetery near Braden. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center — Main Chapel of Somerville.

Mr. Davis was born January 29, 1938 in Fayette County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvis Davis and Lucy Ealy Davis. He received his education in the Fayette County Public School System and had been a lifelong resident of Fayette and Haywood Counties. Mr. Davis was a Christian and had been a resident of the Stanton Community for the past 18 years.

He was employed as a construction subcontractor for the Deviney Company of Arlington and for AT&T Communications before his retirement in August of this year. Known for his love of horses, Mr. Davis was a “cowboy at heart”. He would help anyone who asked for help even if it meant he would go without. He was soft spoken unless something was needed to be said to make things right. He loved the outdoors, working with his horses, walking his fence line and being with his dog. He enjoyed working with his friends of many years.

He will be remembered as a soft spoken person and yet as hard as steel. Strong and steady were names given to Mr. Davis. His legacy is the selfless way he lived his life and the family he left behind to carry on for him. He took great joy in being busy with lots of laughter, the kind of happiness that only the presence of children can bring.

Mr. Davis is survived by his wife, Marsha Thompson Davis of Stanton; his daughter, Shelia Ann Biggs of Arlington; his son, Michael Davis of Arlington; his step-daughter, Gina Youngblood of Memphis; three step-sons, James Dwight Monego of Chicago, IL, Joseph Edward Monego of Magee, MS, James Frederick Nelms of Stanton; three sisters, Ollie Bell Presler of Somerville, Erline Weaver of Somerville, Anne Sue Thurmond of Macon, TN; 16 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his brother, Tommy Hugh Davis of Covington.

Casketbearers included Wayne Biggs, William Henry, Charles Henry, Joseph Monego, James Nelons and Chris Anthony.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Walls Cemetery Association, c/o Debra Lemmon, 1450 Centerpoint Road, Mason, TN 38049 or to the church, charity or organization of the donor’s choice.
