Anne Smith (Kitchens) Payne

March 19, 1931 — December 1, 2016

Anne Ophelia Smith Kitchens Payne, age 85, resident of Somerville, departed this life peacefully Thursday evening, December 1, 2016 at Baptist Memorial Hospital, with her three children at her bedside singing praises and praying.

Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Payne were conducted at 1 P.M. Monday, December 5, 2016 at the Collins Burke Funeral Home in Jasper, Alabama. Interment followed in the Studdards Cross Roads Cemetery in Jasper, Alabama. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center – Main Chapel of Somerville.

Mrs. Payne was born March 19, 1931 in Jasper, Alabama.  She was a graduate of the Walker County School System in Alabama. Mrs. Payne was married to Coy G. Kitchens, who preceded her in death on December 20, 1987 and James W. Payne, who preceded her in death on October 15, 2004. She lived in Montgomery, Alabama for 22 years before moving to Somerville in April 2012.  She attended Oakland Baptist Church and was a lifetime member of First Church of the Nazarene in Montgomery, Alabama.  She enjoyed traveling, shopping and cooking along with gardening, reading and writing memoirs.

Mrs. Payne is survived by her daughter, Terresa Kitchens Montague (Billy) of Somerville; two sons, Dennis Kitchens (Deanna) of Martinsville, IN, Coy F. “Buddy” Kitchens (Melissa) of Lamar, MS; two sisters, Betty Landers of Griffin, GA, Shelby Payne (Phil) of Mobile, AL; six grandchildren, Brad Montague (Kristi), Matt Montague, Danielle Pieper (Jaime), Caleb Kitchens (Amber), Brittany Phillips (Robby), Nathan Kitchen; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Franklin Smith and Bessie Leola Underwood; and two brothers Billy Smith and Ray Smith.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers were Brad Montague, Matt Montague, Caleb Kitchens, Nathan Kitchens, Stanley Payne, Don Payne and Michael Payne.

The family requests that memorials be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Department 142, Memphis, TN 38148.
