Anne Whitehurst Simmons

November 14, 1932 — December 3, 2007

ANNE WHITEHURST SIMMONS, retired employee of the Moscow Savings Bank, resident of the Somerville and Moscow areas for much of her life and wife of the late John Winborn Simmons, died at 11:49 A.M. Monday, December 3, 2007 at the Cordova Rehabilitation & Nursing Center where she had resided since August 2006. She was 75 years of age and died following an extended illness of several months.


Funeral services for Mrs. Simmons were conducted at 2 P.M. Wednesday, December 5th at Morris Memorial Baptist Church in Moscow with Rev. Jim Rowland of Memphis, officiating. Interment followed in the Bethlehem Cemetery near Moscow. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home-Main Chapel of Somerville.


Mrs. Simmons was born November 14, 1932 in Amory, MS, the daughter of the late Odell Whitehurst and the late Katharine Sanders Whitehurst. She moved at an early age with her family to Fayette County where her parents operated a retail store in Somerville. She was a graduate of the Fayette County High School and was married May 21, 1950 to John Winborn Simmons, an employee of General Electric in Memphis and Korean Conflict Veteran who died July 27, 1979.


Mrs. Simmons was a homemaker and had also been employed by the Moscow Savings Bank for a number of years before her retirement thirteen years ago. She will be remembered for her gentle mannerisms and kindness to others. Mrs. Simmons enjoyed pets and all animals.


Survivors of Mrs. Simmons include three daughters: Kathy Perkins (Tommy) of Somerville, Dori Morgan of Cordova and Lisa Vaughn of Camden, SC; two sons, John A. Simmons (Andrea) of Cordova and Tony Simmons (Jana) of Collierville; nine grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.


She was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Dean and Helen Stainback and an infant brother, Richard Whitehurst.


Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Jeff Bing, Jeff Hurdle, John Morgan, Joe Morris, Alex Simmons and Ricky Wilson.


Honorary casketbearers were Tom Luck and Carl Perkins.
