Arthur Ray Darnell, age 90, resident of Oakland, United States Navy Veteran and husband of Mavis O. Darnell, departed this life Wednesday evening, May 4, 2016 at the Baptist Reynolds Hospice House in Collierville.
Services of Remembrance for Mr. Darnell were conducted at 3 P.M. Monday, May 9, 2016 at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Bro. Ray Peters, pastor of the Macon Church of Christ, officiating. Interment followed in the Macon Cemetery in the Macon Community. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center – West Chapel at Oakland.
Mr. Darnell was born July 13, 1925 in the Macon Community. He received his education in the Fayette County Public School System and served his country in the United States Navy as a young person. He was married November 8, 1947 to the former Mavis Scott and was employed for the Citgo corporation in Memphis in the LP gas maintenance department before his retirement in 1988. Mr. Darnell was a member of the Macon Church of Christ where he served as an Elder and was a farmer throughout his life. He enjoyed camping, going to cookouts and in retirement, playing cards, crossword puzzles and special times with his family members and friends.
Mr. Darnell is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mavis Scott Darnell of Oakland; two daughters, Linda Darnell Hillman and her husband, Richard, of Oakland, Sherry Darnell Cobb and her husband, James, of Oakland; seven grandchildren, Rhonda Peltonen, Laurie Cobb, Susan Maddox, April Bernstein, Brandy Wimmer, David Cobb, Erika Napper; and eight great grandchildren, Jacob Platania, Dalton Wimmer, Reese Bernstein, Chase Wimmer, Mavie Bernstein, Victoria Wimmer, Ian Napper and Bradley Hillman.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester Columbus Darnell and Hattie Ann Clemmons Darnell; his siblings, Dillard Darnell, Jessie Houston, Rubye Wallace, Van Darnell, Lenora Morris, George Darnell, Leola Darnell; and two grandsons, Coleman Hillman and Joseph Cobb.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers were John Maddox, Christian Wimmer, Michael Bernstein, Michael Peltonen, Ronald Morris and Bailey Houston. Honorary pallbearers included David Cobb.
