BARBARA MAE SILER EVANS, a resident of the Oakland Community, retired Pharmacy Technician and wife of William Evans died Tuesday evening, March 2, 2010 at the Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital where she had been a patient for one day. She was 73 years of age and died unexpectedly.
Funeral services for Mrs. Evans were conducted at 11 A.M. Saturday, March 6th at St. Philip The Apostle Catholic Church in Somerville with Father Stephen K. Kenny, officiating. Interment followed in the Fayette County Memorial Park Cemetery on Highway 64. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-West Chapel of Oakland.
Mrs. Evans was born in Memphis, Tennessee on March 30, 1936. She was preceded in death by her parents, Woodson Siler and Maebell Conelly Siler.
She received her education in the Shelby County Public School System at Messick and Central Schools.
She was married March 4, 1956 to William Robert Evans, retired Carpenter and U.S. Korean War Veteran, who survives.
Mrs. Evans was a former resident of Tampa, Florida before moving to Fayette County in 1968.
She was employed as a Pharmacy Technician for the K-Mart Corporation in Memphis for a number of years before her retirement in 1992.
Mrs. Evans was a lifelong Catholic and a communicant of St. Philip The Apostle Catholic Church in Somerville while living in Fayette County. She was a compassionate person who held a special interest for those less fortunate and for the homeless.
A devoted homemaker, Mrs. Evans will be remembered as a family-oriented person who received much enjoyment from caring for her grandchildren.
In addition to her husband of fifty-four years, Mrs. Evans is survived by her daughter, Robin Evans Jones of Hickory Withe; her sister, Bonnie Schadler of Mesa, AZ; her grandson, Cody Jones and her granddaughter, Cheyanne Jones, both of Hickory Withe.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, William "Ted" Evans on May 28, 2005.
Those honored to serve as casket bearers were family members and friends.
