Benjamin Franklin (Ben) Matheny, Sr., resident of the Gallaway Community in Fayette County, United States Air Force Veteran and retired employee of Gossett Motor Cars in Memphis departed this life Tuesday morning, April 23, 2013 at the Methodist North Hospital in Memphis where he had been a patient for three weeks. He was 76 years of age and died following a brief illness.
Services of Remembrance for Mr. Matheny were conducted at 3 P.M. Thursday, April 25th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Rev. Donald McCulley of pastor of the First Baptist Church in Dresden, Tennessee officiating. Interment followed in the Burrowtown Cemetery in the Gallaway Community. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center — West Chapel at Oakland.
Mr. Matheny was born August 17, 1936 in the Gallaway Community of Fayette County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Matheny and Hazel Byars Matheny. He received his education in the Fayette County Public School System and had been a resident of the Gallaway Community over 30 years. He was a Methodist and served in the United States Air Force as a young person.
Mr. Matheny had been associated with automobile dealerships for a number of years and had served as a shuttle courtesy van operator for Gossett Motor Cars in Memphis for 15 years until his recent illness. A person who loved outdoor activities, Mr. Matheny enjoyed deer hunting, nature and the buying and selling of horses. The reading of western novels and traveling to the Smoky Mountains and other areas were pleasures that Mr. Matheny enjoyed throughout his life. He was a family-oriented person and enjoyed being with people.
Mr. Matheny is survived by his daughter, April Matheny of Coldwater, MS; three sons, Bobby Matheny (Stacey) of Burrowtown, Ben Matheny, Jr. (Jenny) of Laconia, Jackie Matheny (Tammie Bledsoe) of Cordova; two sisters, Adrian Goff (Sally) of Walnut, MS, Faye Hoskins (Tom) of Grand Junction; three brothers, Charlie Matheny (Linda) of Somerville, Ronnie Matheny of Walnut, MS, Ray Matheny of Burrowtown; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Ben Matheny, Jr., Robert Matheny, Anthony Hubbard, Kenny Matheny, Ray Matheny and Wesley Matheny.
Honorary casketbearers were Landon Hubbard, John Arthur Ables and Frank McCulley.
