Betty Jo (Denton) Craig

January 27, 1944 — June 26, 2013

Betty Jo Denton Craig, resident of Somerville, longtime employee for the Kroger Company before her retirement and wife of Robert Craig departed this life Wednesday morning, June 26, 2013 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis where she had been a patient for one week. She was 69 years of age and died following an extended illness.

Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Craig were conducted at 2 P.M. Saturday, June 29th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Bro. Drew Murphy, minister of the Fayette Baptist Church in Somerville officiating. Interment followed in the Fayette County Memorial Park Cemetery on Highway 64. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center — West Chapel at Oakland.

Mrs. Craig was born January 27, 1944 in Huntsville, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather, Lillie Mae Gann Couch and George Couch. She received her education in the Huntsville, Alabama Public School System and was a graduate of the Butler High School Class of 1962. Mrs. Craig was married December 21, 1962 to Robert Earl Craig, a welder for many years before his retirement, who survives.

Mrs. Craig was employed as a baker for the Kroger Company for over 30 years before her retirement in 2006. She was a resident of the Oakland Community for 21 years before moving to the Somerville Community eight years ago. Mrs. Craig was of the Baptist faith and her interests included gardening, flowers and caring for her yard. She was an avid shopper and received much pleasure in her longtime employment as a baker. Mrs. Craig enjoyed music throughout her lifetime with a special fondness for Elvis Presley hymns and music.

In addition to her husband of 50 years, Mrs. Craig is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Craig Pickard of Somerville; her sister, Jean Cobb (Ray) of Harvest, AL; two grandsons, Cody Craig (Jessica), Robbie Pickard; and her great granddaughter, Rayna Craig. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Cheryl Craig; her son, Robert Earl Craig, Jr.; and her brother, Steve Denton.

Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Jimmy Matthews, Tim Neal, Derrick May, Darrell Denton, Ricky Rigsby and Joe Craig.
