BETTY RHEA SNOWDEN, longtime resident of the Yum-Yum Community in Fayette County, wife of the late C.P. Snowden and a person active in community and religious activities throughout her life, died at 5:05 P.M. Friday, March 28, 2008, at the McNairy County Healthcare Center in Selmer. She was 92 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Funeral services for Mrs. Snowden were conducted at 3 P.M. Sunday at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Rev. Ann Bledsoe, pastor of the Shiloh United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment followed in the Somerville City Cemetery at Somerville. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home - Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mrs. Snowden was born August 15, 1915, in Fayette County, the daughter of the late James Wilson Rhea and the late Mary Lou Cross Rhea, early residents of Fayette County. She was educated in the public school system of Fayette County and was a graduate of the Fayette County High School in Somerville. Mrs. Snowden continued her education at the Normal Teacher's College in Memphis and was the wife of C.P. Snowden, well-known Fayette County farmer and cattleman, who preceded her in death September 13, 1998.
Mrs. Snowden was a homemaker and was a devoted member of the Shiloh United Methodist Church where she participated in numerous church activities including that of a Sunday School Teacher and the United Methodist Women. She was a former active member of the Craddock Book Club in Somerville and the local chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Friends and family knew of Mrs. Snowden's fondness of cardinals and red birds and the color red. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother who found much enjoyment in helping others and participating for many years in the Joyner's Campground Association.
Mrs. Snowden is survived by her daughter, Mary Lou Pilcher ( Rev. Mike Pilcher) of Selmer; her son, Jimmy Snowden (Betty White Snowden) of the Yum-Yum Community; her grandchildren, Amy Morrisson and Jim Snowden and her great-grandchildren, Julia Cross Snowden and Caleb Powell Snowden, all of Somerville.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Tom Morrisson, Wesley Parks, Jr., David Rhea, Sammy Rhea, Carl Thornton and Jay Walker.
