Billy Gaither
1938—2011
Billy O. Gaither, resident of Hernando, former resident of Fayette County and husband of Patsy Gaither died Monday morning, June 20, 2011 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis where he been a patient for 21 days. He was 72 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Services of Remembrance for Mr. Gaither were conducted at 12 Noon Friday, June 24 th at the Somerville Church of Christ with Bro. Alan Underwood of Hernando, officiating. He was assisted by Dr. Leo Powers of the Somerville Church of Christ. Interment followed in the Fayette County Memorial Park Cemetery on Highway 64. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes—Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mr. Gaither was born November 25, 1938 in the Fayette County, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mahon Cecil Gaither and Lillie Anne Cockrell Gaither. Mr. Gaither graduated from the Ripley, Tennessee High School and was married June 12, 1965 to the former Patsy Umphers of Tishomingo County, MS, who survives.
He was employed as a Sales Representative of industrial supplies for the Mid-South Tool Company before his retirement. Mr. and Mrs. Gaither were members of Fayette County for a number of years before moving to Hernando six years ago.
He was a devoted Christian throughout his life and never tired of studying the Bible. Mr. Gaither was loved and respected by his friends and acquaintances and he looked for the best in everyone that he came in contact with. He will be remembered for his strong faith and willingness to help anyone in need, always placing others first.
In addition to his wife of 46 years, Mr. Gaither is survived by his sisters: Lois Anne Smith (Ed) of Clinton, MS, Kathy Frisbee (Marvin) of Lake Elsinore, CA, Phyllis Rottgering (Richard) of Germantown; his brothers: Bob Gaither of Senatobia, MS, Larry Gaither (Jeanne) of Memphis, James Gaither (Shirley) of Byhalia, Louis Gaither (Terry) of Arlington, Sam Gaither (Shelia) of West Memphis, AR, Woody Gaither (Dot) of Moscow, Leon Gaither of Collierville and a special aunt, Maurine Gaither Halliburton of Memphis.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Bob Gaither, Larry Gaither, James Gaither, Louis Gaither, Sam Gaither and Richard Rottgering.
Honorary casketbearers were Richard Mitchell, Jim Byrd, Bernes Johnson, George Adams, Dr. Harold Shivers, Steve Gooch, Phillip Jones, Bill Weddle, Charles Surratt, James Montague, Charles Adams and Billy Whatley.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society or American Diabetes Association.
