BOBBY CHARLES HAMPTON, a resident of the Oakland Community, native Fayette Countian and U.S. Army Veteran, died at 10:25 P.M. Monday, August 18, 2008 at his Oakland residence surrounded by those he loved. He was 75 years of age and died following an eighteen-month illness.
Funeral services for Mr. Hampton were conducted at 11 A.M. Thursday, August 21st at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with the Rev. Kevin Treadway of Somerville, officiating. Interment, with Military Honors, followed in the Arlington Cemetery at Arlington, TN. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mr. Hampton was born October 7, 1932 in Fayette County, the son of the late Charles Edgar Hampton and the late Velma Irene Lowery Hampton. He was educated in the Fayette County Public School System and was a graduate of the Fayette County High School in Somerville. Mr. Hampton served as a Military Policeman in the United States Army during the Korean conflict from 1950 to 1954. He was first married in 1956 to the former Margaret Elizabeth Knight who died in 1997. Mr. Hampton was later married to the former Rebecca Rhea, a Staff Nurse for the V.A. Medical Center in Memphis, who survives.
Mr. Hampton was employed in meat market management for much of his life and served as a Warehouse Manager for the meat department of the Kroger Company for 39 years, before his retirement.
He will be remembered as a devoted and loving family man who was a Master Mason and a former member of the Somerville Jaycees. In earlier years, he was the Owner of Hampton's Grocery and Margaret's Antiques on the Somerville Court Square. His interests included bird hunting, fishing, traveling and a special love for "Mountain Folk Music" with frequent visits to Mountain View, Arkansas.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Hampton is survived by his daughter Sarene Hampton of Birmingham, AL; his step-daughter Doreen Terry of Lakeland; his step-son DeWayne Mayfield of Cordova; his sister Helen Roberson of Somerville; his brother Wayne Hampton of the Warren Community and four grandchildren: Seth and Kim Hampton and Elizabeth and Michelle Terry.
Mr. Hampton is also survived by his very special Caregivers Marie Tatum and Aileen Dickerson. The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to Crossroad Hospice as well for their loving care during his illness.
His son, Kenneth Hampton, preceded him in death in 1991.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers included Terry Knight, Larry Loomis, Carroll Chambers and Carl Smith.
