Bobby Ray Hughes, resident of Jackson, TN, Funeral Director and native Fayette Countian, died at 6 A.M. Thursday, January 24, 2008 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis. He was 55 years of age and died following an illness of several weeks.
Funeral services were conducted at 3 P.M. Saturday, January 26th in the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Rev. J.D. Paris of Atoka, former pastor of the Victory Life Assembly of God Church in Somerville, officiating. Interment followed in the Fayette County Memorial Park Cemetery on Hwy 64. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home - West Chapel of Oakland.
Mr. Hughes was born February 15, 1952, in Fayette County, Tennessee, the son of the late Carroll Edmond Hughes and the late Esther Davidson Hughes. He was educated in the public school system of Fayette County and was a graduate of the Fayette County High School in Somerville. He was employed by the Wilder Youth Development Center and the State of Tennessee in earlier years. He was the recipient of a dual lung transplant in the year 2000. Since that time, he served as a spokesman for the area Lung Association educating people on the adverse effects to the lungs as a result of smoking.
After his lung transplant, Mr. Hughes completed his college education and fulfilled the requirements as a Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer in the States of Tennessee and Florida. He lived in various areas of the United States during his employment and always considered Fayette County to be his home.
Mr. Hughes was a lifelong member of the Assembly of God Church and will be remembered for his quiet mannerisms and his kindness and concern for others.
Mr. Hughes is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Souza of Wellington, FL; his son, Jason Ray Hughes of Memphis; two sisters, Sandra Peeler of Arlington, who was his twin, Evelyn King of Oakland; his brothers, Joseph Hughes of Whiteville, Charles Hughes of Somerville and two grandchildren, Ronnie Gene Haase, Jr. and Brendan Samuel Arruda Souza.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Clint Doyle Cory Doyle, Kenny Triplet and David Peeler. Honorary casketbearers were Jerry Hughes and Mark Hughes.
