BRICE CORBIN WINFREY, a resident of the Oakland Community, United States Navy Veteran and husband of Amy McGhee Winfrey departed this life Saturday morning, February 27, 2010 at the Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital where he had been a patient for one week. He was 60 years of age and died following a two-year illness.
A Celebration of Life Service for Mr. Winfrey was conducted at 11 A.M. Tuesday, March 2nd at the Faith United Methodist Church in Oakland with Rev. Michael Pence, Pastor of church, officiating. Interment with Military Honors followed in the Somerville City Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-West Chapel of Oakland.
Mr. Winfrey was born September 15, 1949 in Bethesda, Maryland to Captain John A. Winfrey of the U.S. Navy and his wife, Virginia C. Winfrey.
He attended school in Memphis where the family settled after military service, but ultimately graduated from the Tennessee Military Institute in Sweetwater, Tennessee. He served as a Quartermaster in the Navy during the Vietnam era.
Upon his return from service he began in the mail room of the Hartford Insurance Company. He rose through industry ranks as a Rater, an Underwriter and Supervising Underwriter to become a Vice-President of Marsh & McClennon, one of the nation's largest reinsurance firms.
Desiring to be near his large West Tennessee family, he left his position in Houston, Texas and returned to Fayette County to begin regular agency employment. At the time of his death he was a Partner in the Blake Stainback Agency of Somerville.
Mr. Winfrey was a Charter Member of Faith United Methodist Church in Oakland and served on its Administrative and Finance Committee until the onset of his illness.
Mr. Winfrey was married December 20, 2003 to the former Amy McGhee Price of Somerville, who survives.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Virginia Allen Winfrey and three brothers: John Allen Winfrey, Jr., Allen Mont Winfrey and Roger Rhea Winfrey.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Winfrey is survived by two daughters, Barbre Paige Brasche (Ryan) of Cordova and Paula Courtney Brown (Chip) of White House, TN; his step-daughter, Jenni Raycher (Jeff) of Los Angeles, CA; his step-son, Garner Price (Rhonda) of Cordova, his brother, F. Bruce Garrett (Leslie Lehr Kinder) of Annapolis, MD and six grandchildren: Sarah, Madeline, Jacob, Collin, Addison and Ethan.
Those honored to serve as casket bearers were Garner Price, Jeff Raycher, Hunter Winfrey, Bob Doll, Buck Matthews and Dan Gregory.
