Burl Lamar Holland, resident of the Gallaway Community, U.S. Army Veteran and retired farmer, departed this life Sunday morning, March 16, 2014 at the Gallaway Health Care Center where he had been a patient for eight months. He was 80 years of age and died following an extended illness.
A Family Memorial Service for Mr. Holland was conducted on Friday, March 21st at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland. Interment was private. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center — West Chapel at Oakland.
Mr. Holland was born September 27, 1933 in Headland, Alabama. He was preceded in death by his parents, Burl Andrew Holland and Birtie Ethel Keel Holland. He received his education in the Houston County, Alabama Public School System. He was a graduate of Cottonwood High School in Cottonwood, Alabama and received his Associate Degree at the George C. Wallace Community College in Dothan, Alabama. He served his country in the United States Army in earlier years.
Mr. Holland resided in Alabama for much of his life and he was a member of Enterprise Baptist Church in Ashford, Alabama. He was a farmer for 17 years before his retirement in 1980. After his retirement, he moved to Millington, Tennessee, where he resided for a number of years before moving to the Gallaway Community in Fayette County. Mr. Holland was a patriotic person and his interests included traveling, watching Southeast Conference Football and farming.
Mr. Holland is survived by his daughter, Charlene White (Bruce) of Millington; his son, David Lamar Holland of Asheville, NC; three brothers, Mickey Holland of Ashford, AL, Danny Holland of Dothan, AL, Wayne Holland of Ashford, AL; his brother-in-law, Charles Sanders of Haleburg, AL; three grandchildren, Burl Andrew Holland (Jill) of Dothan, AL, Ashlee Charlene White of Memphis, Hunter Bruce White (Ashley) of Honolulu, Hawaii; and two great grandchildren, Dylan Holland and Tristan Holland of Dothan, AL.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Jo Holland Sanders.
