Calvin Eugene "Red" Oliver, age 89, resident of Moscow, former mayor of Moscow and husband of the late Dorothy Ann Fortune Oliver, departed this life Wednesday evening, August 31, 2016 at the Methodist LeBonheur Germantown Hospital.
Services of Remembrance with Military Honors for Mr. Oliver were conducted at 1 P.M. Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Rev. Billy Adair officiating. Interment followed in the Friendship Cemetery at Moscow. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center - West Chapel at Oakland.
Mr. Oliver was born August 13, 1927 in Fayette County. He received his education in the Fayette County Public School System and served his country in the United States Marine Corps. He was a lifelong resident of the Moscow area and was married October 17, 1950 to the former Dorothy Ann Fortune. They were members of the Morris Memorial Baptist Church where he was in the choir and was a deacon for many years. Mr. Oliver was employed as a tooling engineer for International Harvester in Memphis before his retirement and he was the former mayor of Moscow for 20 years. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing and drinking coffee with his buddies.
Mr. Oliver is survived by his daughter, Sandra Davis (Ron) of Germantown; two sons, Donald Oliver of Moscow, Van Oliver (Debbie) of Germantown; his brother, Herman Oliver of Bradford, TN; six grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Leona Oliver; three sisters and five brothers.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers were Jack Oliver, Stephen Oliver, David Smith, Bill Ray Morris, Gary Robertson and Carl Gurkin, Jr. Honorary pallbearers were Andy Jenkins and Tony Ammons.
