Carolyn Vernice Rogers Dowdy, resident of the Mt. Moriah Community, retired loan processor and wife of the late James Robert Dowdy died Sunday morning, November 18, 2012 at the Methodist Hospital in Somerville. She was 84 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Dowdy were conducted at 2 P.M. Wednesday, November 21st at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Rev. David Peace of the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church at Whiteville officiating. Interment followed in the Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center — Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mrs. Dowdy was born November 24, 1927 in Somerville. She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnny B. Rogers and Alice Peterson Rogers, early residents of the Mt. Moriah and Whiteville Communities. She received her education in the Fayette County Public School System and was a graduate of the Fayette County High School in Somerville.
She was married August 12, 1949 to James Robert Dowdy, retired sales representative for the Ten-Pen Oil Company, who preceded her in death January 12, 2008. Mr. and Mrs. Dowdy were residents of the Memphis area in earlier years, where Mrs. Dowdy served as a loan processor and officer of the Leader Federal Savings and Loan Company in Memphis. They returned to the Mt. Moriah Community in 1977. In later years, Mrs. Dowdy was employed at the Somerville Bank & Trust Company before her retirement.
Mrs. Dowdy was a member of the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. She had a deep love and affection for her family and will be remembered for her compassion and kindness to others. Mrs. Dowdy was an avid reader throughout her life.
Mrs. Dowdy is survived by two daughters, Sandra Rapp (Larry) of the Mt. Moriah Community, Elaine Greene of Millington; her son, Bob Dowdy (Brenda) of Germantown; her brother, Hubert Rogers of Memphis; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were James Dowdy III, Timothy Dowdy, Rex Rogers, Michael Kent, John Cameron and David Rogers.
Honorary casketbearers were L.A. Rogers, Jr. and Jimmy Kent.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, 1825 Mt. Moriah Drive, Whiteville, TN 38075.
