Sam Carter Boswell, age 87, lifelong resident of Fayette County and husband of the late Sally Winfrey Williamson Boswell, departed this life Tuesday morning, May 10, 2016 at his residence.
Services of Remembrance for Mr. Boswell were conducted at 3 P.M. Friday, May 13, 2016 at the First Presbyterian Church of Somerville with Dr. Ted Dennis, pastor of the church, officiating. Interment followed in the Woodlawn Cemetery near Mason. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center - Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mr. Boswell was born January 26, 1929 in Memphis, Tennessee. He was the son of Eugene Cannon and Aline Holmes Boswell, and younger brother to the late Frank Holmes Boswell and Eugene Cannon Boswell, Jr. He graduated from Fayette County High School in 1946, then attended The University of Tennessee at Knoxville, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture. He served his country in the United States Air Force from 1950 to 1954 and returned home to continue his career as a farmer. In 1956, brothers Frank and Carter, opened Somerville Farm Supply with Frank managing the store and Carter, the Boswell farm. On November 1, 1957, Mr. Boswell was married to Sally Winfrey Williamson. They were married for 50 years before she preceded him in death in 2007.
An active member of his community, Mr. Boswell served 49 years on the Board of Directors of Chickasaw Electric Cooperative, including terms as Vice President and President. He was also one of the founders of Fayette Academy, serving as a member of the first Board of Directors. He was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Somerville, where he was an ordained Deacon. Mr. Boswell will be remembered for his love of farming, his kind spirit, his quiet sense of humor and his special spot on the couch, but his greatest accomplishments and love were for his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mr. Boswell is survived by three daughters, Mary Aline Flaniken and her husband, Keith, of Somerville, Julia Bland and her husband, Robert, of Somerville, Frances Anthony and her husband, Gene, of Collierville; four grandchildren, Mary Rachel Flaniken Petty and her husband, David, Kristen Flaniken, Mary Elizabeth Bland, Robert Bland, Jr.; and two great-grandchildren, Matthew Keith Petty and Mary Kathryn Petty.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sally Winfrey Williamson Boswell; his parents, Eugene Cannon Boswell and Aline Holmes Boswell; and two brothers, Eugene Cannon Boswell, Jr. and Frank Holmes Boswell.
Those honored to serve as casket bearers were Marvin Richardson, David Boswell, Robert Bland, Jr., Richard Rucker, Wesley Parks and Mark Doyle. Honorary casket bearers were Payson Matthews, Alex Moore, David Reeves, Rube Rhea, Jr., Charles Dacus, Jr., Franklin Tapp and Gerald Taylor.
