Catherine Lois Glover Cannon, lifelong resident of the Somerville area, wife of the late Raymond Cannon and one of Fayette County’s oldest residents, departed this life Tuesday afternoon, March 25, 2014 in the comfort of her home. She was 102 years of age and died following a brief illness.
Services honoring the long productive life of Mrs. Cannon were conducted at 2 P.M. Thursday, March 27th at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Bro. David Reeves, pastor of the Midway Baptist Church in Whiteville, officiating. Interment followed in the Old Union Cemetery at Laconia. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center — Main Chapel in Somerville.
Mrs. Cannon was born October 22, 1911 in Somerville. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Allan Glover and Hattie Walls Glover. She was educated in the Fayette County Public School System where she attended elementary, middle and high school in Somerville. She was married March 24, 1939 to Raymond Andrew Cannon, a retired Fayette County farmer, who preceded her in death on May 18, 2000.
Mrs. Cannon will be remembered for her strong work ethic and the care that she gave to her large family. She was blessed to have over 150 living decendents at the time of her death and continued to live at home and care for her own personal needs until her recent illness. Mrs. Cannon was a member of the Feathers Chapel Baptist Church in Somerville.
Mrs. Cannon was a homemaker throughout her life and in earlier years was employed by various local companies that included Winter Gardens Corporation in Rossville, Security Signal in Cordova and Farm to Market Supply Company in Somerville. Gardening and sewing were favorite pastimes that she continued until recent years. Her family remembers that she enjoyed yodeling as a young person and she enjoyed remaining independent throughout her life. She had a lifelong love for nature and outdoors and enjoyed caring for her pet dog, “Nugget” who was her constant companion.
Mrs. Cannon is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Cannon of Somerville, Peggy Maier of Somerville; seven sons, John Martin of Michie, TN, Richard Cannon (Mildrad) of Moscow, Harry Cannon of Williston, Teddie Cannon (Dale) of Somerville, Charles Cannon (Wanda) of Somerville, Bobby Cannon of Somerville, Thomas “Scrap” Cannon (Sharron) of Somerville; 48 grandchildren, 80 great grandchildren and a large number of great great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Cannon was preceded in death by her son, David “Sampson” Cannon, three brothers and four sisters.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were “Little Teddie” Cannon, Tony Cannon, Scottie Anderson, Michael Ray Cannon, “Little Bobby” Cannon and Walter Cannon.
