Cecelia "Cecil" Johnson Davis, age 66, resident of Somerville, retired teacher and wife of Murray Davis, departed this life Monday evening, January 12, 2015 at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Destin, Florida after a courageous 4 1/2 year battle with cancer.
A Funeral Mass for Mrs. Davis was conducted at 2 P.M. Sunday, January 18th at the St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church in Somerville with Father Stephen Kenny, pastor of the church, officiating. Interment followed in the Perry Cemetery at Laconia. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center - West Chapel at Oakland.
Mrs. Davis was born August 24, 1948 in Caruthersville, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her parents, James O. Johnson and Rose Ann Cecil Johnson. She received her education in the Pemiscot County, Missouri Public School System and was a graduate of Caruthersville High School Class of 1966. She continued her education, graduating at Southwest Missouri State in 1970 and at Memphis State University.
Mrs. Davis was married June 3, 1972 to Murray Davis, who survives. She served as a teacher in Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee. Many will remember her as a kindergarten teacher at Oakland Elementary School, where she served for 20 years. She later became a school psychologist for the Fayette County School System. She was a member of the St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church in Somerville and attended St. Ann Catholic Church in Bartlett. She enjoyed traveling and special times with her family and friends.
In addition to her husband of 42 years, Mrs. Davis is survived by two sisters, Frances Hubbard (Tracy) of Centertown, MO, Henrietta Lutes (Ron) of Marble Hill, MO; two nieces and two nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Murray "Cliff" Davis, Jr. who died January 5, 2011.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers were Joe Crump, Terry Davis, Randy Glover, Jarrod Riles, Andy Stevens, Ron Lutes, Raymond Cecil and Kevin Glover.
Honorary pallbearers were Joel Peterson and Jay Glover.
