CHARLENE SMITH WHITTEN, former resident of the Somerville Community and native Fayette Countian departed this life Tuesday afternoon, June 1, 2010 at the Millington Healthcare Center in Millington, TN where she had been a resident for the past six months. She was 77 years of age and died following an extended illness.

A Service of Remembrance for Mrs. Whitten was conducted at 11 A.M. Friday, June 4th at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Rev. Raymond Pasley, pastor of the Sardis Baptist Church, officiating. Interment followed in the Bethesda Cemetery near Selmer, TN. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-Main Chapel of Somerville.

Mrs. Whitten was born May 19, 1933 in Somerville to the late William Smith, Sr. and Pearl Fitzgerald Smith. She was educated in the Fayette County Public School System and was the wife of Billy Joe Whitten who preceded her in death. Mrs. Whitten was a seamstress in the garment industry in earlier years and was a homemaker throughout her life. She also farmed with her family in past years and her interests included reading and sharing special time with her family. She will be remembered for her love of pet canine (Cookie), and traveling throughout the area in her 1985 Dodge Ram truck.

Mrs. Whitten is survived by her two daughters: Rebecca Ruth Spencer of Memphis, TN and Brenda Faye Williams of Millington, TN; three sons: Jimmy Davidson of Saulsbury, TN, James Steven Davidson of Drummonds, TN and Richard K. Davidson of Memphis, TN; 39 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Whitten was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Ray Davidson.

Those honored to serve as casket bearers were Johnny Carter, Joshua Moore, Billy Spencer, Terry Spencer and Wendell Spencer.
