Charles Edward Harvey, longtime resident of the Somerville Community, United States Veteran, retired Farmer and Landowner and a person active throughout his life in the agricultural, religious and community affairs of Fayette County died Thursday morning, January 20, 2011 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis. He was 86 years of age and died following an illness for several months.
A Service of Remembrance for Mr. Harvey was conducted at 2 PM Sunday at Somerville First United Methodist Church where he was a devoted member for many years with Rev. Larry Kendrick, pastor of the church, officiating. Interment followed in the Somerville City Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes—Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mr. Harvey was born July 24, 1924 in Fayette County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alexander H. Harvey and Lydia McKinstry Harvey, early residents of Fayette County. Mr. Harvey was a 1943 graduate of the Fayette County High School in Somerville and continued his education at the University of Tennessee. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was married October 14, 1951 to his beloved wife, Juanita Maness Harvey. Mr. and Mrs. Harvey were married for 59 years before her death on December 5 th of last year.
Mr. Harvey was an active member of the Somerville First United Methodist Church where he participated in numerous church activities that included serving as a Trustee, member of the Administrative Board and Church Historian.
A person known for his love of agriculture and Fayette County, Mr. Harvey was the proud owner of Estanulla Oaks Farm that received the distinction of being a Tennessee Century Farm, owned and operated by the Harvey family for over 100 years. His many interests included serving as a Director for the Somerville Bank and Trust Company, President and Charter Member of the Fayette County Historical Society and a participant in numerous agricultural activities. Mr. Harvey enjoyed hunting, gardening and traveling with family and friends.
Mr. Harvey is survived by his daughter, Charlotte Harvey of Arlington, TN, his son and wife, Ed and Victoria Harvey of Franklin, TN, and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Alexander and William Harvey.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Bill Barnes, David Boswell, John David Douglas, Matt Rhea, Scott Rhea and Steve Shelton.
Honorary casketbearers were Billy Barnes, Dr. Whit Middlecoff, Dr. Sam McFadden, Randal Tapp, Alex Moore, David S. Robertson, Joe Shelton, Chuck Welch, Rube Rhea, Jr., Lawrence Harvey, James H. Shelton, Frank Boswell, David Fowler, Alva P. Robertson, Alex Harvey, John Farris, Dean White, Jamie Jenkins and members of the Wesley Sunday School Class.
