Charles Edward Smothers, Sr.

Charles Edward Smothers, Sr., age 77, resident of Memphis and husband of Eulene Wells Smothers, departed this life Sunday morning, October 16, 2016 at his residence.

Memorial Services for Mr. Smothers were conducted at 4:30 P.M. Saturday, October 22, 2016 at the Second Baptist Church in Memphis with Dr. Steven Cook, pastor of the church, officiating. Interment was private. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center – West Chapel at Oakland.

Mr. Smothers was born June 13, 1939 in Memphis, Tennessee. He received his education at Southside High School in Memphis, the William R. Moore College of Technology in Memphis, Clarke College in Newton, Mississippi (where he received his Associate of Arts degree), William Carey University (where he received his Bachelor of Science degree), New Orleans Theological Seminary in New Orleans, Louisiana (where he received his Master of Theology) and the University of Memphis.

Mr. Smothers was married May 27, 1961 to the former Eulene Wells and he served as a pastor, teacher and missionary for 30 years before his retirement. He was a former residence of Newton, Mississippi, Jackson, Tennessee, Poplarville, Mississippi, New Orleans, Louisiana, Pelahatchie, Mississippi, Asunción, Paraguay in South America and Memphis, Tennessee.

Mr. Smothers is survived by his wife of 55 years, Eulene Wells Smothers of Memphis, TN; three sons, Charles Edward “Eddie” Smothers, Jr. (Jo Ann) of Memphis, TN, Richard Alan Smothers (Patricia) of Knoxville, TN, Gregory Wayne “Greg” Smothers (Rhonda) of Olive Branch, MS; his sister, Barbara Keen of Oakland, TN; his brother, James “Jim” Smothers (Carol) of Oakland, TN; seven grandchildren, Ian McCloud (Stephanie) of Memphis, TN, Jeremy Smothers (Desiree) of Oakland, TN, Justin Smothers of Knoxville, TN, Brent Baldwin of Knoxville, TN, Daniel Smothers of Olive Branch, MS, Alex Smothers of Olive Branch, MS, Analisa Smothers of Olive Branch, MS; three great-grandchildren and his close friend, his pet dog, Sebastian.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Bennett Smothers and Anna Lee Mills Smothers and his granddaughter, Elena  Hope Smothers.
