Christine (Gage) Sherman

January 17, 1924 — May 19, 2014

Christine Gage Sherman, resident of the Oakland Community and one of the few remaining people in West Tennessee who served as a United States Army Nurse during the World War II Period, departed this life Monday morning, May 19, 2014 at the St. Francis Hospital in Bartlett where she had been a patient for four days. She was 90 years of age and died following a brief illness.

Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Sherman were conducted at 2 P.M. Thursday, May 22nd at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Bro. Jim Palmer officiating. Interment followed in the Fayette County Memorial Park Cemetery on Highway 64. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center — West Chapel at Oakland.

Mrs. Sherman was born January 17, 1924 in Clovis, New Mexico. She was preceded in death by her parents, George T. Gage and Nan Elizabeth Pruit Gage. She received her education in the Texas Public School System and was a graduate of the Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas. She was the wife Ray Monroe Sherman, a retired United States Air Force Veteran, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Sherman served stateside and overseas as a United States Army Nurse during the World War II Period with the rank of Captain. After being discharged from the military, she continued to be associated with healthcare and nursing for much of her life and before her retirement, also served as a river towboat cook.

Mrs. Sherman was a devoted member of the Oakland Church of Christ and was a resident of Dallas, Texas before moving to the Oakland Community twelve years ago. She will be remembered for her steadfast independence. She remained active and lived alone in her residence at Oakland until her recent illness, being blessed with good health until her death. She will be remembered for the love that she had for her son and grandchildren. Flower gardening and adding to her large collection of angels were an important part of her life.

Mrs. Sherman is survived by her son, Darwin O. (Spud) Sherman and wife, Rita of Olive Branch, MS; four grandchildren, fourteen grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren.
