CLOVIS VICTOR "RED" CARNATHAN, resident of the Arlington Community, United States Veteran and longtime Service Station Owner and Operator died at 1 P.M. Sunday, May 17, 2009 at the Methodist LeBonheur Germantown Hospital where he had been a patient for five days. He was 82 years of age and died following a six-month illness.
Funeral services for Mr. Carnathan were conducted at 2 P.M. Wednesday, May 20th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Rev. Jim Debardeleben, Pastor of the Chambers Chapel United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment with Military Recognition followed in the Chambers Chapel Cemetery near Arlington. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-West Chapel of Oakland.
Mr. Carnathan was born February 18, 1927 in Tupelo, Mississippi the son of the late Argie Carnathan and the late Willie Mae Markle Carnathan.
He moved at an early age with his parents to the Arlington area and received his education in the Shelby County Public School System.
He was married June 8, 1951 to the former Maxine Baxter, who survives.
Mr. Carnathan was drafted into the United States Army serving in the World War II Period and later enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served during the Korean conflict.
He was a longtime service station owner, operating Red's Auto Service Station located in the Shelby Center "Four-Way Community" for over forty years before his retirement in 1985.
Mr. Carnathan had been a resident of the Arlington Community for over fifty years and was a member of the Chambers Chapel United Methodist Church.
He was an avid fisherman who enjoyed music and dancing. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather and for the closeness he developed for his many friends during his long service station career.
In addition to his wife of fifty-seven years, Mr. Carnathan is survived by his daughter, Debbie Betz of Arlington; two sons, Eddie Carnathan (Elizabeth) of Hickory Withe, and Vick Carnathan (Jodi) of Germantown; his sister, Billie Jean Canada of Ashland, KY and his brother, Armstrong J. Carnathan of Memphis and eight grandchildren.
Those honored to serve as casket bearers were family members and friends.
