Dorris Gene Smith, resident of Memphis and U.S. Army Veteran died August 13, 2013 at the Rainbow Health & Rehab Center in Bartlett where he had been a patient for 2 months. He was 80 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Services of Remembrance with Military Honors for Mr. Smith were conducted at 2 P.M. Friday, August 16th at Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Bro. Bill Pierce of the Rugby Hills Baptist Church in Memphis, officiating. Interment followed in the Somerville City Cemetery and arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center — West Chapel of Oakland.
A native of Ashland, Mississippi, Mr. Smith was born September 29, 1932. He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel R. Smith and Willie S. Work Smith. He served as a young person in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was married October 16, 1959 to his wife Nancy Carol, who survives.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith were residents of Memphis for much of their life where Mr. Smith was a Brick Mason and Contractor for 56 years before his retirement six years ago. He was a member of the Rugby Hills Baptist Church in Memphis and received much pleasure in assisting his friends with small construction projects.
In addition to his wife of 54 years, Mr. Smith is survived by his daughter, Bonnie Perry (Joe) of Olive Branch, Mississippi, his son, Darryl Smith (Patty) of Bartlett, Tennessee, two sisters, Marie Charles of St. Petersburg, Florida, Dolly Mae Lee (Clyde) of Somerville, Tennessee and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers.
Family members and friends were casketbearers and memorials are requested to Rugby Hills Baptist Church, 2025 Clifton Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee 38127.
