Dan Powell

March 27, 1953 — July 11, 2014

William Daniel “Dan” Powell, age 61, died peacefully at his home in Memphis on Friday July 11, 2014 in the company of family and friends.  He is the son of John and Sylvia Powell of Kosciusko, Mississippi, who survive him.

He is also survived by his four sisters, Donna Scott (George) of Memphis, Diane Hembree of South Carolina, Katrina Minor (Tom) of Rossville, TN, and Teresa Richerme of Kosciusko, MS.  He also leaves to cherish his memory three nieces, three nephews and many dear friends.

Dan was honorably discharged from the United States Navy and was a graduate of the University of Memphis (Bachelor of Science in Engineering).  He was a respected construction contractor in the Memphis area for more than 30 years.  He was a member of the Bluff City Canoe Club and was an accomplished canoer.  He was most content giving aid to others through his profession or through his hobbies, which in addition to canoeing, included mountain climbing, hiking, and caring for his many pets.  Words simply cannot convey how much he will be missed.

A Celebration of Dan’s Life was conducted at 2 P.M. Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Rev. Stan McDaniel, pastor of the Somerville First United Methodist Church, officiating. Personal remarks were given by Jim Smith, Sandy Stacks, LeAnne Logan and Len Kelly. Special music was provided by Desiree Logan and Debbie Kines. A Private Interment will be in Kosciusko, Mississippi. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center – West Chapel at Oakland.

The family wishes to express its deepest appreciation to those friends who volunteered and sacrificed their time to care for Dan during these last difficult months.  It is requested that any memorials be directed to the Wolf River Conservancy, P.O. Box 11031 Memphis, TN  38111 or  Baptist Trinity Home Care & Hospice, 6141 Walnut Grove Memphis, TN 38120.
