DAVID CARL STEVENS, JR., resident of the Oakland Community, husband of Mary Jane Stevens and truck operator for the Graham Contract Mail Service in Memphis, died Friday, March 28, 2008. He was 60 years of age and died unexpectedly.
Funeral services for Mr. Stevens were conducted at 11 A.M. April 4th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Dr. Sam Laine, pastor of the Oakland Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment followed in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery at Hickory Withe. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home - West Chapel of Oakland.
Mr. Stevens was born April 30, 1947, in Fayette County, the son of the late David Carl Stevens, Sr. and the late Ruth Barkley Stevens. He was educated in the Fayette County public school system and was a graduate of the Fayette County High School in Somerville. Mr. Stevens was a lifelong resident of the Somerville and Oakland areas and was married April 3, 1986, to the former Mary Jane Grady, a native of Pennsylvania and employee of Carriage Tours of Memphis.
A person who enjoyed nature and out of door activities, Mr. Stevens was a member of the Oakland Presbyterian Church and the Experimental Aircraft Association. At the time of his death, he was building a small plane and was studying for his pilot license. He will be remembered for his love of baseball and the rural way of life. Mr. Stevens was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Stevens is survived by four children, Darcy Locke of Memphis, Emily Stevens, Nathan Locke and Marten Rose, all of Oakland; his brothers, Sam and Tom Stevens, of Oakland, Jimmy Stevens of Bartlett and Andy Stevens of Somerville and 2 grandchildren, Kaitylyn Michelle Rose and Tiffiny Nicole Rose.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Gene Dennie, Marten Roase, Gene Stevens, Johnny Stevens, Billy Stevens and Keith Rocks.
The family request that memorials be directed to WKNO Educational Channel 10 in Memphis or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
