DAVID DOYLE "CHIEF" GIVENS, a resident of the Hickory Withe Community, longtime Federal Government Employee, U. S. Navy Veteran and husband of Connie Lewis Givens died Wednesday morning, February 25, 2009 at his residence on Catalpa Drive. He was 63 years of age and died following an illness of several months.
Funeral services for Mr. Givens were conducted at 2 P.M. Friday, February 27th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Rev. Christopher Treat, Pastor of the Christ Presbyterian Church in Somerville, officiating. Interment followed in the Somerville City Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home-West Chapel of Oakland.
Mr. Givens was born in Memphis on March 22, 1945, and lived in Somerville during his childhood. He attended Fayette County Schools and graduated from Fayette County High School in 1963. He received his Bachelor of Accounting Degree at Delta State University in Cleveland, MS.
Mr. Givens served in the United States Navy and was assigned to the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Ranger. He worked for the federal government at the Army Depot in Memphis and at the Corp of Engineers Finance Center in Millington. At his retirement he was a Supervisor at the Finance Center with over forty years of service with the federal government.
Mr. Givens was a Presbyterian his entire life and served as a Deacon and an ordained Elder in the Presbyterian Church. During college, "Chief" was very active in Westminster Fellowship. During his adult life he was active in the John Knox Society, an organization that his father and other Presbyterian men formed to provide fellowship for the men in Presbyterian churches in West Tennessee. He was a Charter Member of Christ Presbyterian Church in Somerville.
A Volunteer Fireman for the Williston Fire Department in earlier years, Mr. Givens also served as a Little League Baseball Coach in Somerville. He was a member of the Somerville Masonic Lodge and a Scout Leader for Troop 95 of the West TN Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He was a Vigil Member of the Order of the Arrow and a member of Wood Badge. In his many years as a Scout Leader he received numerous awards for his service.
Mr. Givens was preceded in death by his father David Doyle Givens, Sr. He leaves his wife Connie Lewis Givens of Hickory Withe; mother, Hazel Hamil Givens of Greeneville, TN; sister, Emily Givens O'Dell (Joe) of Greeneville, TN; daughter, Lindsey Givens Malone of Cleveland, TN; son, Ladd Givens of Fort Knox, KY; two stepsons, four grandsons and five step-grandchildren.
Those honored to serve as casket bearers were Holt Hall, Steve McCool, Andrew McDow, Ike Taylor, John Charles Wilson and "SY" Wilson.
Honorary casket bearers were Mike Atkeison, Joel Batts, Bill DuBard, Tim Hook, Greg Kinney, Pat Patterson, Bill Rhea and Russ White.
