David Harrison “Dave” Barbour, resident of the Hickory Withe Community, retired employee of Whitco Corporation and husband of the late Dorothy “Dot” Howell Barbour, departed this life Monday evening, January 13, 2014 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis where he had been a patient for four days. He was 74 years of age and died following an illness of five years.
Services of Remembrance for Mr. Barbour were conducted at 11 A.M. Thursday, January 16th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Bro. Ray Peters, minister of the Church of Christ at Macon, Tennessee, officiating. Interment followed in the Fayette County Memorial Park Cemetery on Highway 64. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center — West Chapel at Oakland.
Mr. Barbour was born July 26, 1939 in Olive Branch, Mississippi. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Bernard Barbour, Sr. and Margaret Evelyn Bailey Barbour. He received his education in the DeSoto County, Mississippi Public School System and was a graduate of the Olive Branch High School. He was married July 5, 1959 to the former Dorothy “Dot” Howell, a retired accounting clerk for the TBC Corporation in Memphis, who preceded him in death on July 1, 2012.
Mr. Barbour was a member of the Church of Christ at Macon and had been a resident of the Arlington-Hickory Withe Communities for over 27 years. He was employed as a maintenance supervisor for the Whitco Corporation (formerly Humko Chemical) in Memphis for over 40 years before his retirement 14 years ago. In earlier years, he enjoyed racing stock cars with his sons and was an avid hunter that included hunting excursions with his brother and nephews in the western states that included Colorado and Wyoming. Fishing with his coworkers was also a favorite pastime.
Mr. Barbour is survived by two daughters, Deborah Pafford (John) of Eads, Dianna Barbour of Arlington; two sons, David Barbour (Lori) of Oakland, Dennis Barbour (Kara) of Lakeland his sister, Margaret McClain (Jim) of Winchester, TN; two brothers, John Barbour (Marie) of Cheyenne, WY, Walter Barbour (Ann) of Spruce Pine, AL; and three grandchildren, David Ray Barbour (Anna) of Germantown, Sarah Barbour of Oakland and Mackenzie Barbour of Lakeland.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Jimmy Scott, Terry Kerbough, Gene Barbour, Jeff Sojourner, Donnie Peak and Gary Perkins.
