Dessie Mae (Matthews) Johnson

Dessie Mae Matthews Johnson, age 75, resident of the Somerville Community, departed this life Thursday afternoon, October 16, 2014 at the Dove HealthCare Center in Collierville.

Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Johnson were conducted at 11 A.M. Monday, October 20th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Bro. John Ed Watkins officiating. Interment followed in the Eads Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center - West Chapel at Oakland.

Mrs. Johnson was born September 6, 1939 in Oakland. She was preceded in death by her parents, Perry Matthews, Sr. and Mattie Henley Matthews. She was the wife of Carl Johnson, Sr. who preceded her in death. She was of the Baptist faith and was a homemaker throughout her life. Mrs. Johnson enjoyed gardening, flowers, sightseeing and listening to blues and country music. Special times with her family was an important part of her life.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by two daughters, Dolly Mae Johnson, Brenda Carol Matthews of Bolivar; four sons, Jimmy Dean Matthews, Sr. of Oakland, Carl Johnson, Jr. of Oakland, Daniel Johnson of Somerville, Jason Johnson; two sisters, Lula Bolden of Oakland, Stella Johnson of Jackson, TN; her brother, Perry Matthews, Jr. of Somerville; and seven grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Amy Johnson; four sisters, Elsie Pittman, Evelyn Johnson, Irene Matthews, Joann Matthews; and her grandson, Christopher Matthews.

Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Greg Carpenter, Brady Sanders, Larry Sanders, Dustin Matthews, Jeremiah Matthews and Jimmy Matthews, Jr.
