DOROTHY FAYE CHAMBERS JENKINS, longtime resident of the Oakland community and wife of Walter E. Jenkins, died at 12:30 P.M. Saturday May 17, 2008, at the St. Francis Hospital in Memphis, where she had been a patient for one week. She was 71 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Funeral services for Mrs. Jenkins were conducted at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, May 20th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Don Green, of Memphis former Minister of the Oakland Church of Christ, officiating. Interment followed in the Fayette County Memorial Park Cemetery on Highway 64. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-West Chapel of Oakland.
Born June 11, 1936 in Fayette County, Mrs. Jenkins was the daughter of the late Rufus B. Chambers and the late Pearl Hampton Chambers. She received her education in the Fayette County Public School System and was a graduate of the Mid-South School of Cosmetology in Memphis. Mrs. Jenkins was married December 8, 1953 to Walter E. Jenkins, longtime Oakland area farmer, who survives.
Mrs. Jenkins was a member of the Oakland Church of Christ and had been a resident of Wirt Road near Oakland for 41 years. She was a homemaker throughout her life and also served as a beautician for a number of years, working for others and also operating her own shop. In later years she was employed as a salesperson for Maxine's Dress Shop in Somerville, before her retirement.
Mrs. Jenkins was a lifelong resident of Fayette County and will be remembered as a family-oriented person who enjoyed flowers.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter Pamela Jenkins Tedford of Henderson, TN; two sons, Ricky (Vickie) Jenkins and Kenneth (Donna) Jenkins, both of Oakland; two sisters, Julie McCaskill of Williston and Linda Crafton of Somerville and one brother, Carol Chambers of Somerville; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brother Darrell Chambers.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Brad Tedford, Wes Tedford, Matt Jenkins, Alan Jenkins, Bennie Hopkins and Billy Canady.
