Dorothy "Dot" Jean (Wooley) Sledge

November 30, 1930 — September 24, 2014

Dorothy Jean "Dot" Wooley Sledge, resident of the Oakland Community and wife of Will Sledge, went home to be with her Heavenly Father on Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at age 83 surrounded by her loving family at the Methodist Hospice Residence in Memphis.

Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Sledge were conducted at 2 P.M. Sunday, September 28th at the Somerville First Baptist Church with Dr. Ken Story, pastor of the church, officiating. Special music was provided by Dr. Steve and Kay White. Interment followed in the Fayette County Memorial Park Cemetery on Highway 64. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center - West Chapel at Oakland.

Mrs. Sledge was born on November 30, 1930 in McComb, Mississippi. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee Wooley and Carrie P. Cole Wooley. She was the second of five children. Early in her youth the family moved to Greenville, MS where she received her education in the Greenville Public Schools and the Greenville College of Commerce. She was employed by the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Greenville in 1956, beginning as a bookkeeper and retiring as Office Manager.

In 1976 she met her beloved spouse, Wilbur J. Sledge, and they worked together at Coca-Cola for 12 years until they retired together in 1988. They enjoyed 38 years of wedded bliss. Dot enjoyed travelling, reading, cooking and entertaining friends and family. She was also very active in church activities at First Baptist Church of Greenville, MS and later at the First Baptist Church of Somerville. She served on numerous church committees; always doing what she could and trying to be faithful.

Mrs. Sledge is survived by her husband, Will Sledge; 2 brothers, Rex Wooley of Greenville, MS, Charles Wooley of Lake Comorant, MS; five children, Ron Pope (Gerry Ann) of Germantown; Julia P. Davis (Frank) of Germantown; Susan P. Stokes (Al) of Greenville, MS, Bill Sledge (Bobbi) of Bartlett, Elaine S. Leggett (Richard) of Lakeland; 13 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Sammy Wooley of Dallas, TX and her sister, Mackie Mauceli of Greenville, MS.

The family wants to sincerely thank the multitude of friends who sent cards of love and caring to Dot during her illness.  The family also wants to extend our sincerest gratitude and thanks to the caring and dedicated staff of the Methodist Hospice Residence for their compassionate care of our mother during her last days.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers were Tim Davis, Rick Leggett, Brandon Sledge, Clint Stokes, Clay Stokes, Stephen Pope, Geoff Pope and Andy Duguay.

Honorary pallbearers were the retired plant managers from Coca-Cola Bottling Company and the Senior Adult Men at the First Baptist Church of Somerville.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Building Fund at Somerville First Baptist Church, 12685 S. Main Street, Somerville, TN 38068 or Community Bible Study at Somerville First Baptist Church, 12685 S. Main Street, Somerville, TN 38068.
