Douglas Owen "Doug" Choplin, resident of Bartlett, Sales Manager with GE Capital Aviation Services in Memphis and husband of Shelva Wood Choplin, departed this life Tuesday evening, September 16, 2014 at the Methodist University Hospital in Memphis where he was a patient for two weeks. He was 76 years of age and died following an illness of one year.
Services of Remembrance for Mr. Choplin were conducted at 11 A.M. Saturday, September 20th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Rev. Darrell Clarke, a pastor at Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova, officiating. Personal remarks were given by Ken Mathews, a family friend. Interment followed in the Fayette County Memorial Park Cemetery on Highway 64. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center - West Chapel at Oakland.
Mr. Choplin was born June 14, 1938 in Mount Airy, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Howard Choplin and Elizabeth Wall Choplin. He received his education in the Winston Salem, North Carolina Public School System and was a graduate of Mineral Springs High School.
Mr. Choplin was married December 6, 1959 to the former Shelva Wood, a retired x-ray technician, who survives. He was employed as a Sales Manager for the General Electric Capital Aviation Services in Memphis at the time of his death. He was a resident of the Bartlett area for 25 years and a member of Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova. Mr. Choplin enjoyed reading, playing cards and games and outdoor activities that included fishing, gardening and caring for his lawn. He will be remembered as a family-oriented person who enjoyed special times with his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife of 54 years, Mr. Choplin is survived by three daughters, Shannon MacPhail (Dave) of Westfield, MA, Kim Stanley (Paul) of Bolingbrook, IL, Sabrina Choplin of Bartlett, TN; his sister, Marianne Addington (Larry) of Tobaccoville, NC; two brothers, Wayne Choplin (Becky) Pfafftown, NC, Edward Choplin (Kay) of Glade Valley, NC; and two grandchildren, Jessica MacPhail and Melissa MacPhail.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Henry Maroney, Jim Winchester, Bud Stone, Roger Stout, Jim Duncan and Jim Ramsey.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the church, charity or organization of the donor's choice.
