Dr. Kearney Durward Spears

Dr. Kearney Durward Spears, resident of the Oakland Community, retired dentist, and wife of Bonnie Spears departed this life Saturday afternoon, November 2, 2013 at the Methodist LeBonheur Hospital in Germantown. He was 89 years of age and died following an extended illness.

A Celebration of Life Service with Military Honors for Dr. Spears was conducted at 7 P.M. Tuesday, November 5th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Pastor Michael Higgins of Southaven, Mississippi officiating. Interment will be private. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center — West Chapel at Oakland.

Dr. Spears was born June 10, 1924 in Oxford, Mississippi. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney Earl Spears and Carra Hooker Spears. His formative years were during The Depression on a farm in Oxford, Mississippi and he cherished these memories. Dr. Spears returned to the land and nature after retirement to the Oakland Community. He was a graduate of the University of Mississippi at Oxford and the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry in Memphis. He served in the United States Army as a Staff Sergeant during the World War II Period.

Dr. Spears was a dentist in the Memphis area for a number of years and was a former resident of Memphis before moving to Fayette County 28 years ago. A Christian and a natural mechanic with the ability to build or repair almost anything, Dr. Spears enjoyed outdoor activities that included bird hunting and bass fishing.

Dr. Spears is survived by his wife, Bonnie Spears; his daughter, Carra Spears Day of Flower Mound, TX; two sons, Michael Spears of Olive Branch, MS, Billy Spears of Memphis; and four grandchildren, Shiloh Christian Spears, London Michael Spears, Graham Jeffrey Day and Leslie Ann Day.
