Edith Blocker Staggs, age 92, resident of the Collierville Community, former resident of Hendersonville, Tennessee with extended family members in Fayette County died Sunday morning, August 12, 2012 at the residence of her daughter, Sue Bigham, in Collierville.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Staggs were conducted on Wednesday, August 15th in Columbia, Tennessee with Interment in the Polk Memorial Gardens Cemetery at Columbia. Local arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center – Main Chapel of Somerville.
A native of Maury County, Tennessee and the daughter of the late Grover C. Blocker and Annie Wilma Bishop Blocker, Mrs. Staggs was a graduate of Hampshire High School. She married Charlie Franklin Staggs, who preceded her in death on February 5, 1975. Mrs. Staggs was retired from Turner Manufacturing Company and participated in work essential to the production of the Atomic Bomb, thereby contributing to the successful conclusion of World War II and receiving the Army-Navy “E” Award.
Mrs. Staggs was a member of the Holiday Heights Baptist Church in Hendersonville. She loved her God, her family, fishing, softball and playing the penny slots at Tunica.
Mrs. Staggs is survived by her children, JoAnn Brightwell (Gerald) of Opelika, AL, Tommy Staggs (Mary Jo) of Earle, AR, Sue Bigham (Billy) of Collierville, Billy Staggs (Lynn) of Collierville; her brother, Ray Blocker of Mt. Pleasant; three sisters, Alma Massey of Cross Bridges, Ruby Wesmoreland of Columbia; nineteen grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
Pallbearers were Chuck Longfellow, Matt Bigham, Jeremy Bigham, Jonathan Sain, Scott Kennedy, Tommy Vaughn, James Wilkinson and Roy Phillips.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the church, charity or organization of the donor’s choice.
