Edward Joshua Mathis, Sr., age 86, resident of Decatur, Alabama, former resident of West Tennessee with extended family members in Fayette and Shelby Counties, United States Army Veteran and husband of Bernice Jean Campbell Mathis died at the Decatur General Hospital.
Graveside Services for Mr. Mathis were conducted at 1 P.M. Monday at the Memphis Memory Gardens Cemetery on Raleigh LaGrange Road in Memphis. Arrangements were provided by the Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center - Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mr. Mathis was born November 13, 1925, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa son of the late Milo Jennings Mathis and the late Olga Janda Mathis. He was in the 63rd division, 254th Infantry regiment of the US Army in WWII. He was a member of the Masons in Memphis, TN. He retired from Redstone Arsenal Army Missile Command. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed.
Mr. Mathis is survived by his loving wife, Bernice “Jean” Campbell Mathis of Decatur, AL; his son, Edward J. Mathis, Jr. (Scarlott) of Hartselle, AL; his daughter, Phyllis Mathis Holt (Jerry) of Trinity, AL; his granddaughter, Emily H. Hollis (Heath) of Trinity, AL; two step grandchildren, Chris Holt (Beth) of Athens and Pam Hale (Tony) of Trinity, AL; four step great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Mathis was preceded in death by his sister, Catherine Horn and three brothers, Milo J. Mathis, II, Frank Bures and Chuck Bures.
