EDWARD HOWARD YANCEY, SR.

EDWARD HOWARD YANCEY, SR., retired Postal Service Mail Carrier, U. S. Army Veteran and native Fayette Countian died at 6:30 A.M. Friday, February 6, 2009 at the Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin, Tennessee where he had been a patient for one week. He was 80 years of age and died following a brief illness.

Funeral services for Mr. Yancey were conducted at 2 P.M. Sunday, February 8th at the Graveside with Rev. Freddie Clifft, Pastor of the Shady Grove Baptist Church at Somerville, officiating. Interment followed at the Hood Cemetery in the Warren Community. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-Main Chapel of Somerville.

Mr. Yancey was born June 21, 1928 in Somerville. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Howard Yancey and Edna Earl Carnathan Yancey. He received his education in the Fayette County Public School System and served in the United States Army from 1951 until being discharged in California in 1956. Mr. Yancey remained in California where he was employed by the United States Postal Service as a Mail Carrier for over thirty years before his retirement.

After retirement Mr. Yancey returned to the Memphis area and was a resident of Red Banks, Mississippi. He was married July 19, 1965 to the former Ollie Elizabeth Wolf who preceded him in death on March 10, 1999. Mr. Yancey moved to Bradford, Tennessee two and a half years ago to reside with his son David Yancey, who assisted in caring for his father in later years.

He was a member of the Grace Baptist Church at Red Banks and will be remembered for his love of outdoor activities and special times with his family. He was a people person with a great fondness for his pet cat, "Hammer".

Survivors of Mr. Yancey include two sons, Robert William Yancey of Jackson, TN and David Yancey of Bradford, TN; two sisters, Evelyn Doyle of Somerville and Ruby Bell of Red Banks, MS and three grandchildren.

Those honored to serve as casket bearers were Billy Yancey, Michael Beretta, David Beretta, Darrin Doyle, Trevor Blair and Billy Ross Doyle.
