Edward Maurice Gaines, Sr., age 75, resident of Arlington and husband of Sue Kirk Gaines, departed this life Saturday morning, November 19, 2016 with an apparent massive heart attack at his lake house on Kentucky Lake.
Services of Remembrance for Mr. Gaines were conducted at 11 A.M. Saturday, November 26, 2016 at the Arlington United Methodist Church with Rev. Larry Woodruff, pastor of the church, officiating. Remarks were given by Rev. Larry Kirk, Jack Pearson, Garrett Brown, Cameryn Gaines Anderson and Steele Billings. Interment followed in the Arlington Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center – Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mr. Gaines was born November 3, 1941 in Henning, Tennessee. He was a graduate of Ripley, Tennessee High School and was a former resident of Memphis before moving to Arlington 31 years ago. He was married January 31, 1981 to the former Sue Kirk and he was a member of the Arlington United Methodist Church.
Mr. Gaines was an entrepreneur and the owner of Gaines Sales and Service, a hardware store in Ripley, Tennessee. He was the owner of Maurice Gaines & Associates Real Estate and held various roles in other companies such as Vice President of Sales, Manager and Sales Trainer. He was a former Chairman at the Lauderdale County School Board, a mayor of the City of Arlington and the Vice President of the Arlington Cemetery Association. Mr. Gaines enjoyed antique cars, remodeling older houses, boating and politics. He enjoyed skiing in earlier years and spending time at his lake house on Kentucky Lake.
Mr. Gaines is survived by his wife of 35 years, Sue Kirk Gaines of Arlington, TN; three sons, Maurice Gaines, Jr. (Memory) of Ripley, TN, Kirk Brown (Lisa) of Somerville, TN, Jonathan Gaines (Amanda) of Ripley, TN; his sister, Ella Jo Gaines of Memphis, TN; his brother, William “Bill” Gaines (Jo Ann) of St. Charles, MO; eight grandchildren, Cameryn Gaines Anderson (Nathan), Garrett Brown, Olivia Gaines, Edward Maurice “Reese” Gaines, III, Jacob Corder, Ali Gaines, Jacqueline Swee Billings (Steele), Stephanie Swee; and his great-grandson, Noah Montana Billings.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles William (C.W.) Gaines and Beatrice Steelman Gaines; his daughter, Susan Brown Corder; his brother, Charles Roy Gaines; and two grandsons, Tanner Gaines and Jordan Kirk Brown.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers were Reese Gaines, Garrett Brown, Jacob Corder, Steele Billings, Sonny Kirk and Kevin Gaines.
