Elna (Stovall) Watson

Elna Stovall Watson, age 98, resident of the Gallaway Community and wife of the late Layton Wall Watson, departed this life Sunday morning, March 5, 2017 at her residence.

Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Watson were conducted at 11 A.M. Friday, March 10, 2017 at the Gallaway First Baptist Church with Bro. Ronnie Grunewald, pastor of the church, officiating. Interment followed in the Layton Cemetery in Gallaway. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center - Main Chapel of Somerville.

Mrs. Watson was born May 2, 1918 in Memphis, Tennessee. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur Hill (A.H.) Stovall and Doxie Mitchell Stovall. She was a graduate of Memphis Tech School and was married March 21, 1961 to Layton Wall Watson, who preceded her in death on October 7, 2004. Mrs. Watson was a homemaker throughout her life and a lifelong resident of the Fayette County area.

She was a member of the Gallaway First Baptist Church for 55 years and was active in the Fayette Baptist Mission Association where she was their secretary and treasurer for 15 years. Mrs. Watson taught and worked with the youth for 35 years and was the executive director of the Gallaway Housing Authority for 13 years. She was the mayor of Gallaway for three years, vice-mayor for six years and the city recorder for 30 years.

Mrs. Watson is survived by her son, Ray Moody (Kay) of Pensacola, Florida; her daughter-in-law, Vaughn Moody of Birmingham, Alabama; three grandchildren, Karen M. Goss (Arthur) of Memphis, Tennessee, Mary Catherine Brownfield (Chaz) of Atlanta, Georgia; William Christopher Moody of Memphis, Tennessee; and her great-grandson, Dylan Goss of Memphis, Tennessee.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son, William Howard Moody who died February 8, 2014; her sister, Gladys Morris; and three brothers, Ralph Stovall, John Stovall and Morman Stovall.

Pallbearers were family members and friends and the family requests that memorials be directed to the Gallaway First Baptist Church, 377 Main Street, Gallaway, TN 38036.
