Emmett "Terry" Garner

Emmett Terrell “Terry” Garner, age 66, resident of Memphis and husband of Peggy Miller Garner, departed this life Wednesday afternoon, April 8, 2015 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis.

Services of Remembrance for Mr. Garner were conducted at 3 P.M. Sunday, April 12th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Bro. Jim Whitley, pastor of the Liberty Baptist Church in Laconia, officiating. Interment followed in the Macon Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center - West Chapel at Oakland.

Mr. Garner was born June 24, 1948 in Memphis, the son of Agnes Bailey Garner and the late Emmett Roman Garner, Jr. He received his education in the Shelby County Public School System. He was a graduate of Messick High School Class of 1966 and received his Bachelor’s Degree from Memphis State University in 1974. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War period. He was married March 3, 1973 to the former Peggy Miller, who survives.

Mr. Garner was a longtime resident of Memphis and a former resident of the Macon Community before he started his Law Enforcement career. He was member of Lindenwood Christian Church in Memphis. Mr. Garner was employed as an investigator with immigration in Miami, Florida, worked with the U.S. Customs in Key West, Florida and as a Federal Police Officer at the Defense Depot in Memphis. He also worked at President’s Island under the command of the U.S. Navy before his retirement. Mr. Garner enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing golf, watching football and was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan. He received much pleasure in helping others and will be missed by all that knew him.

In addition to his wife of 42 years, Mr. Garner is survived by his daughter, Gena Lane Garner of Memphis; his mother, Agnes Bailey Garner of Cordova; his sister, Janet Garner of Memphis; and a special niece, Ashley Turnage of Memphis.

Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Bill Burton, Shane Burton, Lance Burton, Mark Starnes, Michael Starnes and Rusty Garrington.
