ERNESTINE SUE COCKE LEWIS

August 30, 1916 — February 10, 2009

ERNESTINE SUE COCKE LEWIS, longtime resident of the Moscow Community, wife of the late Jessie Vivian "Vip" Lewis and Substitute School Teacher at Moscow Elementary School for many years died peacefully at 8:45 P.M. Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at the Methodist Hospital Fayette in Somerville where she had been a patient for four days. She was 92 years of age.

Funeral services for Mrs. Lewis were conducted at 2 P.M. Friday, February 13th at the Moscow United Methodist Church in Moscow with Rev. Jim Griffith, Pastor of the church, officiating. He was assisted by Rev. Larry Kendrick of Somerville, former Pastor of the church. Interment followed in the Friendship Cemetery on Highway 57 near Moscow. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home-Main Chapel of Somerville.

Mrs. Lewis was born August 30, 1916 at the Forest Hill Community in Shelby County, the daughter of James Nathaniel Cocke and Annie Sue Bobbitt Cocke, both deceased.

Mrs. Lewis was involved throughout her life in the church and civic activities of her community and Fayette County. She will be remembered for her strong devotion to her family, her church and her oatmeal cookies made for the church kindergarten class are legend.

Her dry wit was always a welcome surprise and many will remember her as one of the Fabulous Five Ladies from Moscow who tirelessly volunteered for and sustained Fayette Cares in its beginning stages.

Survivors of Mrs. Lewis include a son, Vip Douglas Lewis and Barbara Ozier Lewis; two Grandchildren, Paul Mitchell Lewis and Kim Schwartz Lewis of Collierville and Mandy Lewis Crane and Tripp Crane of Germantown and three great-grandchildren. She also leaves two brothers, Josiah Nathaniel Cocke of Macon, TN and James Bobbitt Cocke of Sacramento, CA and many very special nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

She was preceded in death by two sons, James Grason Lewis and Ben Mitchell Lewis; her sisters, Frances Louise Cocke Douglas and Betty Anne Cocke Harris and a brother, Fred Russell Cocke.

Those honored to serve as casket bearers were Tripp Crane, David Douglas, John David Douglas, Stephen Henry, Rex Lewis and Reynould Lewis.

Honorary casket bearers were James Bruce Cocke, Jim Henry, Donnie Leggett, Gary Lewis, Robin Lewis, Danny Tacker and James Teague.
