Essie Pearl Dawkins, longtime resident of the LaGrange community and wife of the late James Luther Dawkins died Friday afternoon, May 25, 2012 at the National Health Care Center in Somerville where she had been a resident for 10 months. She was 94 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Dawkins were conducted at 2:30 P.M. Sunday, May 27th at the Morris Chapel Baptist Church in Somerville, where she was a devoted member, with Bro. John Ed Watkins of the church officiating. Interment followed in the LaGrange Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center — Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mrs. Dawkins was born August 11, 1917 in Little Rock, Arkansas. She was a former resident of Shelby County in earlier years and had been a longtime resident of the LaGrange and Grand Junction areas. Mrs. Dawkins was married for 38 years to James Luther Dawkins, a well-known timberman and sawmill operator in Fayette and Hardeman Counties, before his death November 7, 1969.
She enjoyed cooking, flowers, housekeeping and gardening. Mrs. Dawkins will be remembered for her love of children, family members and her community. She was one of the oldest residents of her community at the time of her death.
Mrs. Dawkins is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Tacker of Grand Junction; her son, Charles L. Dawkins of Grand Junction; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
Mrs. Dawkins was preceded in death by two daughters, Jo Ann Thompson, Dorothy Jean Moss; and two sons, Albert Dawkins and Larry Dawkins.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were family members and friends and the family requests that memorials be directed to the Morris Chapel Baptist Church, 475 Feathers Chapel Road, Somerville, TN 38068.
