Evelyn Elizabeth (Umberger) Alley

October 7, 1913 — May 20, 2016

Evelyn Elizabeth Umberger Alley, age 102, resident of Knoxville, former resident of Somerville and wife of the late Dr. Franklin H. Alley, departed this life Friday, May 20, 2016 at the National HealthCare Center in Farragut, Tennessee.

Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Alley were conducted at 11 A.M. Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with George Bishop, Mrs. Alley's son-in-law, officiating. A prayer was given by Paul Roberts. Interment followed in the Somerville City Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center - Main Chapel of Somerville.

She was a member of the First Evangelical Church in Memphis. Prior to moving to Knoxville, Tennessee in 1999, she lived in Somerville, Tennessee and Memphis, Tennessee. She was born to Grover and Bess Ryan Umberger on October 7, 1913 in Wytheville, Virginia and moved to Kingsport, Tennessee at an early age. She was a 1934 RN graduate of the Vanderbilt School of Nursing where she met her future husband, Franklin H. Alley, MD. He was a respected thoracic surgeon in Memphis for over 30 years.

Mrs. Alley was preceded in death by her parents, Grover M. Umberger and Bess Ryan Umberger; her sister, Edna Umberger; and her husband of 60 years, Dr. Alley.

She is survived by her daughter, Arminta "Sally" (George) Bishop of Knoxville; her son, Dr. Franklin B. (Jeannie) Alley of Nashville; six grandchildren, Dr. G. Blaine Bishop, Jr., Karen Bishop King, Leah Bishop Roberts, Mark F. Alley, Laura Alley Barquero, Susan Alley Welch; fifteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

She was a gracious lady who will be remembered for her warm smile, friendly personality, wit, strong Christian faith and positive outlook on life. Special thanks to the NHC Farragut Health Care, Assisted Living and Physical Therapy staff for their competent, compassionate care.
