Evelyn Powell Shivers, age 91, resident of Somerville, Tennessee and wife of the late Dr. Harold R. Shivers, departed this life Tuesday afternoon, July 4, 2017 at her residence.
Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Shivers were conducted at 2 P.M. Saturday, July 8, 2017 at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Mrs. Shivers son-in-law, Ron Roberson, officiating. Interment followed in the Somerville City Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center – Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mrs. Shivers was born September 3, 1925 in Fruitland, Tennessee, the youngest daughter of Ralph Ratlin Powell and Annie Lou McDougal Powell. She was the last surviving of eight children, four sisters and three brothers. She was a graduate of Peabody High School in Trenton, Tennessee, where she excelled in basketball and married the captain of the football and basketball teams, Harold Shivers, on June 30, 1946. Dr. Shivers preceded her in death on November 23, 2014.
Mrs. Shivers worked for seven years in order to help put Harold through dental school and then worked in his office as his secretary and dental assistant until her retirement in 1988. She was a talented musician and singer and loved entertaining in her home and had a special way of making holidays and birthdays into grand celebrations. She was a Christmas enthusiast who had her living room decorated for Christmas all year long.
Mrs. Shivers was a faithful member of the Somerville Church of Christ since 1952. She was known for feeding visiting preachers and their families in her home and for being active in the special card ministry. She was an excellent cook who took food to others until she was 90 ½ years old when she was crippled from a stroke. Mrs. Shivers loved to fish and could always catch a fish when no one else could. She was a vibrant, loving and caring woman who was an avid bird watcher and flower admirer.
Mrs. Shivers is survived by three daughters, Sherry Roberson (Ron) of Germantown, TN, Debbie German (Charlie) of Somerville, TN, Tammie Love (Dwayne) of Bartlett, TN; three sisters-in-law, Doris Humphreys of Trenton, TN, Marian Shivers of Richardson, TX, Christeen Shivers of Oxford, MS; three granddaughters, Amy Westerholm (Chad), Calli Fanous, Jenni Harper (Andrew); eight great-grandchildren, Maggie Westerholm, Emma Fanous, Ella Fanous, Jane Westerholm, Jacob Fanous, Bella Harper, Carter Harper, Jack Westerholm; many treasured nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog, Dixie.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Rebecca Presson (Ed), Martha Poston (Frank), Gladys Powell (Joe), Sara Cleek (Bunt); and brothers, Franklin Powell (Wilma), Clayton Powell (Christine) and James Preston (infant).
The family wishes to give a special thank you to her nurse and friend, Judy Bishop, who lovingly cared for her around the clock over the past 11 months, enabling her to live at home.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers were Danny Cleek, Mitch Cleek, Rick Taylor, David Shivers, Randy Humphreys, Kenneth Shivers, Gary Gaugh, Ralph Poston and Jack Delong. Honorary pallbearers were Bill Weddle, Richard Mitchell, Jim Byrd, Carl Trimm, Chuck Nance, George Adams, Bernes Johnson, Gary Birmingham and Tommy Sanders.
