Floyd "Buddy" Vernon Johnson

Floyd Vernon “Buddy” Johnson, resident of the Williston Community, United States Veteran and husband of Betty Ruth Johnson departed this life Friday morning, August 2, 2013 at the National HealthCare Center in Somerville where he had been a resident for 18 months. He was 84 years of age and died following an extended illness.

Services of Remembrance for Mr. Johnson were conducted at 2 P.M. Saturday, August 3rd at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Rev. Freddie Clifft, pastor of Shady Grove Baptist Church in Somerville officiating. Interment followed in the Evergreen Cemetery at Williston. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center — Main Chapel of Somerville.

Mr. Johnson was born January 5, 1929 in Peekskill, New York. He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd Vernon Johnson, Sr. and Olga Andorka Johnson. He moved as a young person with his family to the Memphis area and received his education at the Humes High School in Memphis. He served in the United States Navy as a young person and was married August 2, 1952 to the former Betty Ruth Kissner, a native of Clarksville, Tennessee, who survives.

Mr. Johnson was a Christian and had been a resident of Fayette County for the past 41 years. After his military service, he served as a civilian fireman at the Millington Naval Air Station. He was a former member of the Fayette County Rescue Squad and was employed as a warehouse supervisor for the Delta Beverage Company in Collierville for over 30 years before his retirement ten years ago.

After his retirement, Mr. Johnson was employed by the Methodist Hospital Systems in Somerville. He will be remembered as a person devoted to his family and enjoyed woodworking throughout his life.

In addition to his wife of 61 years, Mr. Johnson is survived by two daughters, Marybeth Umbarger (Jimmy) of Somerville, Sandol Johnson of Williston; his beloved granddaughter, Sophie Umbarger of Somerville; and a special canine companion, “Jack”. He was preceded in death by his son, Floyd Vernon Johnson, III.
