Garner M. Houston

February 25, 1944 — February 4, 2017

Garner M. Houston, age 72, of the District 15 Community, passed away on February 4, 2017 at the Baptist Reynolds Hospice House after a lengthy battle with ALS. He was born in Fayette County on February 25, 1944 to Talmadge Houston and Ruby Garner Houston. Garner was a well-known water well contractor for nearly 40 years. It was a career he enjoyed deeply.

After graduation from Fayette County High School in 1962, he went to work for Wilson Well Company which also had a grocery store. Garner started out as a butcher and store clerk manager before he moved over to the well company. He worked and managed it for a total of seventeen years. He enjoyed doing this kind of work so he opened his own company, Garner Houston Well Company, in 1978. He remained active until health problems in 2013 forced him to retire. He also served in the Army National Guard for seven years with a rank of E7.

He is survived by his wife of 50-1/2 years, Sue Parks Houston; his daughter, Zondra Houston of Somerville; his four grandchildren, Ragen, Reed, Rodney and Sierra; three great-grandchildren, Houston, Camryon and Caroline; two brothers, Joe and Donald; and one sister, Shelby. He was preceded by his father and mother, by his son, Elliot; brother, Lawrence; and two sisters, Bonnie and Inez.

Services of Remembrance were conducted at 11 A.M. Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland. Interment with Military Honors followed in the Parks Chapel Cemetery in the District 15 Community. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center - West Chapel at Oakland.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers were Bobby Phillips, Rodney Tatum, Jr., Bill Mason, Conrad Powers, Lee Graves and Tony Kirk. Honorary pallbearers were Jimmy Powers and Gary Smith.
