George Newton Bailey, Jr., resident of the Oakland Community, United States Veteran and husband of Martha Sue Bailey departed this life Friday evening, May 24, 2013 at the St. Francis Hospital in Bartlett where he had been a patient for nine days. He was 79 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Services of Remembrance with Military Honors for Mr. Bailey were conducted at 2 P.M. Tuesday, May 28th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland. The officiating ministers were Bro. Tommy Stutts, a cousin of Mr. Bailey, of Jackson, TN and Bro. Terry Scott, a brother-in-law of Mr. Bailey, of Jumpertown, MS. A Private Interment was in the Halls Cemetery in Halls, Tennessee. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center — West Chapel at Oakland.
Mr. Bailey was born July 2, 1933 in Halls, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Newton Bailey, Sr. and Carrie Belle Harris Bailey. He received his education in the Lauderdale County Public School System and moved to the Memphis area with his family as a young person, graduating from high school in Shelby County. He was married October 13, 1954 to the former Martha Sue Scott of Prentiss County, Mississippi, a retired employee for the Schering-Plough Company in Memphis, who survives.
Mr. Bailey served his country as a U.S. Army Veteran during the Korean War period and was a resident of Memphis for a number of years before moving to the Oakland Community 43 years ago. He served as an office equipment technician in the Memphis area for much of his life and retired from the Memphis Business Equipment Company in 1989.
He was a faithful and devoted member of the Oakland First Baptist Church, where he served in numerous leadership positions that included serving as a Church Deacon. He had been a member of the church choir and was a Sunday School and Training Union teacher for a number of years before his illness. He received much pleasure in teaching, sharing and telling others of his love for the Bible and his Heavenly Father. Mr. Bailey enjoyed reading and all outdoor activities. He took much pride in caring for his yard as long as health permitted.
In addition to his wife of 58 years, Mr. Bailey is survived by his daughter, Nancy Moffitt of Heber Springs, AR; his son, George Newton Bailey, III of Oakland; five grandchildren and two great granddaughters. He was preceded in death by an infant son, James Timothy Bailey; and a grandson, Timothy Eugene Moffitt.
